Ok…I can see you rolling your eyes there. I’m talking about iPods…what has this world come to? Can’t I find an even more conformist thing to talk about?
Well, actually, I find them an interesting phenomenon. Because they’re such a topic of either love or hate. Actually. Quite fascinating. I recently received an iPod for Christmas from my uncle and aunt…I actually had no idea they were giving me one and really didn’t want one. My initial reaction was: “Great. Now I’m like everyone else”. I took the iPod home and stuck a few songs on it to test it out, and now I think it’s rather useful. So.
Well, let’s look at the good things first, then, I guess. Because they’re so immensely popular, there must be something good about them. Well, obviously, it’s good because you can put a bunch of different songs in one place. I suppose that’s the best thing about an iPod…it’s that you don’t have to lug around fifty thousand CDs and it’s also rather compact. As well, it’s easy to use, the screen is nice and LCD (I think…) and the clicky wheel thing is rather amusing. I guess that’s the good thing about iPods: they’re convenient and easy to use.
Well…they’ve also got some things that aren’t so good, right? Well, the first thing is the price. People are willing to pay a lot for convenience these days, and Apple knows it. They’re taking advantage of what we want and pushing it to the limit…how much are you willing to sacrifice so you don’t have to lug a bunch of CDs around all day? Of course, people will now argue about MP3 players. You will easily find a lot that cost less than an iPod and perhaps have even more space. The reason people opt for iPods in the stead of these MP3 Players is perhaps for two reasons: the consumer wants to be like everyone else (YAY CONFORMIST); or the person likes the screen of the iPod. The thing I find frustrating about MP3 Players is their screens…I can’t see the words and I have to squint and it hurts my eyes. Another disadvantage to iPods is that everyone has them…we’re all insecure in the fact that we want to be different, to set ourselves apart from everyone else. Well. Some people are conformist slaves and others are defiant rebels…there are precious few that don’t really care what the world thinks of them (either if they act like conformists or rebels).
All in all…I grudgingly accept my little new digital music player. It’s convenient. =] Although I’m not too happy I’ve just lumped myself into a group of a bunch of conformists, there really is a function behind these little guys…there has to be some reason they’re so popular.
However, I won’t throw out those cassette players…cassettes still PWN all. B)
